Create a more equitable city with access to services and social programs
Diversity with equity is inclusivity. Burlington is a great city, but almost 9,000 of its residents live below the poverty line and issues like homelessness, drug addiction and lack of access to quality childcare are still pervasive.
Smart growth can foster social equity by giving residents of all ages and income levels access to affordable housing, jobs, and critical services like education, health care, and nutrition. Mixed use development in downtown allows residents from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds to live in the same community and access services without having to own a vehicle. While these benefits reduce the need for social programs, the tax revenue from this development provides additional funding to better serve our most vulnerable residents.
