Make Burlington more walkable and bikeable and reduce traffic
Creating a walkable and bikeable city takes real work. It requires infrastructure changes that cost money and impact businesses and the municipality. Often open streets and bike lanes have to compete with vehicles for territory and efficiency and the number of users doesn’t justify the expense.
Smart growth changes the equation by designing and building for density and access to services in downtown. Developments with a mix of residential, commercial and retail space allow more people to walk and bike where they need to go, and the number of users and the increased tax revenue allows the infrastructure to be justified and financed.
